The Origin of Sivaram, a great human [Maamanithar]
Published On: 11 May, 2010 , Sangam
Two years ago, I solicited and received the following tribute to journalist Taraki Sivaram (1959-2005), by one of his mentors V. Sivasubramaniam from Batticaloa. Sivasubramaniam Aiyah, a nonagenarian, is one of the respected Tamil scholars in Eelam who leads a ‘silent’ life without much fanfare and publicity. I thought of honoring his 90th birthday that fell on August 17th 1918, by soliciting this piece on his favorite protege. Somehow, I was overwhelmed by work and personal events that followed one after another in my life.

Published On: 12 April, 2010 ,
For 20 years or more it was a combat zone, a frontline and a strategic asset. Now light traffic travels down the narrow A9 highway. From the checkpoint at Omanthai, where Sri Lankan soldiers and fighters from the Liberation Tamil Tigers of Eelam (LTTE) once exchanged their dead, to Elephant Pass – scene of fierce battles in the 1990s – all is quiet. The Tamil Tigers are no more. This territory, once their de facto state, is now very much part of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.

Vanaja Uma Khanta is waiting for the 794 bus to Kodikamam. It has been a long time coming. The queue for the bus stretches all the way down the yellow concrete shelter and mixes with that for the 794 for Kanakamuydady. Despite the crushing heat and the delay – in part caused by the arrangements for a political rally attended by newly re-elected president Mahinda Rajapaksa – the crowd waits quietly.
Real war is just beginning, get involved: Brian Senewiratne
Published On: 20 March, 2010 , Tamilnet
“Despite my involvement over many years, I was taken aback by the result,” writes Brian Senewiratne on the overwhelming mandate for Tamil Eelam in the referenda of the diaspora in several countries. The time for federation has long since gone. Until the Tamil areas are separated from the control in Colombo there will be neither peace nor prosperity in the island.

The former commander of the Sri Lankan army, retired general Sarath Fonseka is today under military detention in much the same way that tens of thousands of Sri Lankans from the south, north and east in detention facilities in the recent decades.
